What did I do today?
Today I visited Tollymore HotRock Climbing Wall in Bryansford, Near Kilcoo, Castlewellan and Newcastle areas of the Mournes and Down. I did an instructional course with Mountaineer and Expert Climber Jonny Parr, It isn’t 20 minutes from Newry, Hilltown, Warrenpoint Burren, Downpatrick, Rostrevor, Rathfriland and many other towns in the Mournes area.
Where Did I do It
We arrived at the Tollymore Outdoor Centre with over 50 years of Mountain Sport, they are the leaders in outdoor sports training and adventure courses for beginner, intermediate and advanced options. I drove from the House after leaving the kids to school and completed a 3 hour instructor course in what seemed like the blink of an eye.
Who Did I do It with?
Jonny Parr was our instructor and has a very unique style of teaching things, for example he wanted to teach us to hold the rope in confidence when the other climber falls, he demonstrated this by building up the confidence of one of the participants so much that he climbed a route beyond his grasp, upon reaching about 10 metres he fell and this allowed the teaching of the other climber who was holding the rope to develop at the expense of the embarrassment of that climber. that climber was me and I have made it a personal mission to get that Purple 6+ route the next time around.
Why did I do it?
I wanted to start to do something different for the benefit of my mental health & general physical training or exercise, I have attended many gyms, made friends and enjoyed to social aspect of circuit training and bootcamps, but I wanted to try something other than that, something completely new, every time it would be different and simulated climbing in a safe controlled environment at Tollymore provided this in buckets today.
I am only writing this blog post about 6 hours after the course and I can feel my shoulders, arms and mainly fingers are all worked out. I feel a exhausted more than usual and at this time of night that can only be a good thing.
When can you Do this?
Tollymore Outdoor Centre is open all year round and the Staff are Super Friendly and you can just talk to them and tell them what your looking to achieve, that is probably your best option to get involved by contacting them directly and just expressing your interest.
